Planning Construction Around an Operating Business

A commercial project needs a plan for both the work and the business using the building. Start by identifying what must stay in use and where an interruption can be scheduled.

Map out the operating requirements

Share business hours, busy periods, deliveries, and areas that need to remain accessible. Identify who can answer facility questions and coordinate access. These details help frame a workable sequence before scheduling decisions are made.

Discuss the constraints of the facility

A medical office, manufacturing facility, and retail space can have very different requirements. ABI has experience in medical, dental, pharmaceutical, and industrial facilities, including chemical plants, manufacturing facilities, and cleanroom environments. Discuss the requirements relevant to your particular scope; the building type alone does not define them.

Plan interruptions and reopening

Ask which work areas can remain in use, whether some work can take place outside normal hours, and what needs to be ready before an area is used again. Some scopes require an interruption. Discuss those limits early rather than assuming every activity can continue throughout construction.

Experience working outside business hours

Clients have trusted ABI to work overnight and leave their offices clean and ready to open the next morning, without keeping an employee onsite throughout the work. That is an example of past work; access arrangements and completion timing depend on the individual project.

Prepare a useful project brief

Start with a general description. Confidential facility information can be discussed separately when deciding how to share it.

  • Property type, city, and approximate size of the work area
  • Desired changes and any available scope or plans
  • Operating hours, access restrictions, and areas that must remain in use
  • Target dates and the person coordinating the project
